Have a Wonderful Weekend

have a wonderful weekend suzanne-mccarthy.comThis weekend Simon and I are going to the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards. Among this year’s recipients of the highest honour in the performing arts in Canada are Sarah McLachlan, Atom Egoyan and Jean-Marc Vallee (he directed The Texas Buyers Club and Wild) so it should be entertaining.

It’s a black tie affair, meaning we have to get all fancy and stuff. Nothing in my closet that comes even close to that level of glam, so I’m taking advantage of this service. I go for a private fitting tomorrow morning. They have heaps of dresses to choose from, some by designers whose dresses were worn on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. Wow!

Other than her non-comedic performance in Saint Vincent, I haven’t enjoyed much of what Melissa McCarthy has done since the hit film Bridesmaids, but this looks funny.

I could create some kind of comforting nest amongst the rubble. At least that would be my impulse.a singke hyacinth in a vase adds beauty to a home

Maybe my fascination with home and homemaking began when I was a kid watching Looney Tunes. Continue reading

Make Your Own Thai Spring Rolls

I take pleasure in wrapping things. I like wrapping sandwiches in parchment paper for school lunches, wrapping a parcel in brown paper to be sent in the mail. I get a certain satisfaction from folding something neatly and securely into a tidy package.

I also love rolling and wrapping Thai Spring Rolls. It requires a certain amount of skill, a skill I didn’t initially have, but with practice I’ve become quite good at it. You can too. Continue reading

Why I Love to Take Pictures of Food

In the last couple of years I’ve picked up our camera and really started playing with it. I love taking photos. There’s so much beauty in my immediate surroundings – in the kitchen or elsewhere in our home and in the garden – I don’t have to travel very far to find interesting things to photograph.
